Learning to Breathe Again
Not completely. We still have schedules to keep, projects to finish, and a house full of kids that somehow manage to keep every day interesting. But the constant feeling of running from one crisis to the next has finally started to ease, and I didn't realize how much I needed that until now.
This summer has been full of the little moments that often get overlooked. We've spent time simply enjoying being together as a family. There haven't been grand vacations or life-changing adventures, just laughter around the house, conversations that linger a little longer, and the kind of memories that remind me why the ordinary days matter so much.
I've kept myself busy in the best ways. The kids' bedrooms have slowly transformed under fresh coats of paint, each room becoming a reflection of who they are. It's amazing how something as simple as painting a wall can make a house feel a little more like home.
While I’m excited for school to start again so I can be back in the classroom, I just started my second-to-last class, and it's hard to believe the finish line is finally in sight. There have been so many long days, assignments, and moments where I questioned whether I had enough left in me to keep going. Now I can finally see graduation on the horizon, and that's a feeling I don't take for granted.
One thing I'm counting down to more than anything, though, is next week… I get my son back a week early! I have missed him more than words can truly explain. No matter how busy life gets, there's always been a part of me that feels incomplete when he's away. Knowing he'll be home soon has brought a kind of excitement that's been carrying me through these last few days.
When the house gets quiet at night, I've found myself returning to two things that have become a refuge this year: writing and reading.
My book continues to grow SLOWLY one chapter at a time, and with every page I write, I feel like I'm rediscovering a part of myself that got buried beneath stress, responsibilities, and everything this year has demanded, and when I finally close my laptop, I reach for another story. Reading has become my way of slowing my thoughts, escaping for a little while, and reminding myself that peace doesn't always come from fixing everything. Sometimes it comes from simply allowing yourself to rest.
This year has been heavy.
There have been moments that tested me in ways I never expected, moments that left me wondering how much more one person could carry. But seasons change, even when they feel endless. I'm learning that healing isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like fresh paint on bedroom walls, books stacked beside the bed, words filling blank pages, kids laughing down the hallway, and counting the days until someone you love comes home.
Maybe this season isn't about finding the old version of myself.
Maybe it's about discovering the person I became because I survived the hard one.
And for the first time in a long time...
I'm okay with slowing down long enough to breathe.
